La canzone era stata lanciata nel 1967 da Gladys Knight & the Pips e raggiunse il secondo posto nella Billboard. La versione di Marvin Gaye raggiunse il primo posto della Billboard Pop Singles e vi rimase per sette settimane. Rolling Stone ha classificato il brano al #80 della lista The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. I Creedence Clearwater Revival incisero la loro versione per l’album Cosmo’s Factory del 1970.
