Nei primi anni settanta, dopo i Cream e i Blind Faith, Clapton trova ispirazione in JJ Cale, di Cale sono infatti After Midnight e Cocaine. Poi Clapton ha collaborato con Cale nell’album The Road to Escondido (2006). Con questo album tributo Clapton salda il debito verso JJ Cale. Anche se le sue interpretazioni sono impeccabili, sembrano troppo formali. I momenti migliori arrivano con Tom Petty e Mark Knopfler che riescono a essere personali. (Rolling Stone)
In un certo senso quasi ogni album di Eric Clapton registrato dopo il 1970 è stato un omaggio a JJ Cale… Con questo album Eric Clapton ha deciso di pagare un tributo in piena regola. Ogni artista che ha partecipato fornisce una sua inerpretazione dei brani di JJ Cale ma è tutto in funzione dello stesso ritmo rilassato, la differenza tra i musicisti scompare nell’insieme delle canzoni. E’ tutto perfettemente piacevole ed è una testimonianza convincente di quello che Clapton ha appreso da Cale. (AllMusic)
